Greenland ‘Defying Ban’ By Selling Whale Meat To Tourists

The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS) said an undercover investigation had found that tourist businesses were targeting visitors to the country with menus that included bowhead and other whale meat.

The International Whaling Commission permits the killing of a limited number of whales each year, but only to meet the needs of local aboriginal people. But WDCS said it had documented a number of restaurants and hotels – as well as supermarkets – openly selling whale meat to tourists.

The investigation comes ahead of the commission’s annual meeting in Panama next month, where Denmark is expected to demand that Greenland can catch more whales to meet the demand of its indigenous people. WDCS said the investigation showed it was already catching more than required…

A decline in the population of emperor penguins appears likely this century as climate change reduces the extent of Antarctic sea ice, according to a detailed projection.

The study, led by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), with co-authors from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and other organizations, focuses on a much-observed colony of emperor penguins in Terre Adélie, Antarctica. The authors conclude that the number of breeding pairs may fall by about 80 percent by 2100…

Man Gored By 2,000 Pound Bison

A man spending time in the wilds of Yellowstone National Park was gored by a full-grown bull bison that threw him 10 feet in the air and then pinned him to the ground.

The man, who is in his mid-50s and from Massachusetts, suffered a broken collarbone, shoulder blade, several ribs and a groin injury in Saturday’s encounter near the Norris campground.

But remarkably, he is expected to not only survive, but recover from his injuries…
