Japan Zoo Hunts For Escaped Penguin

The hunt was on Monday for a penguin that scaled a sheer rock face to escape from a Tokyo zoo, and was last seen swimming in a river in the Japanese capital.

The one-year-old Humboldt penguin was snapped bathing in the mouth of the Old Edogawa river, which runs into Tokyo Bay, after fleeing its home in the east of the city in an echo of the hit animated film Madagascar.

Takashi Sugino, an official at Tokyo Sea Life Park, said the 60-centimetre (24-inch) bird appeared to have got itself over a rock wall twice its size and made a run for it…

Badger Baiter Calls In Police After Threats And Intimidation

A man convicted of badger baiting has been subjected to a series of threats and is believed to be a major target of animal rights activists.

Police are investigating after William Anderson, 26, from Pickering, claimed he was being harassed upon his release from prison after serving just one month of his 16-week jail sentence.

It is thought he has been blacklisted, along with other gang members who were convicted for the offence, on a string of websites run by animal rights groups…

Reward Offered In Illegal Montana Cat Trapping Mutilation Case

The Humane Society of the United States and The Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust are offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for setting the illegal trap that resulted in permanent injury to a domestic cat in Great Falls, Mont.

According to published media reports, on Jan. 26 a male cat—later named “George” by rescuers—was found in a leghold trap on Wilson Butte Road. The cat’s leg was broken by the trap. He was recovered by a citizen who brought him to the Great Falls Animal Shelter where veterinarians were forced to amputate his leg. George has since been adopted and is doing well…
