Zebras who had escaped from a petting zoo were found wandering in a small town after an employee reportedly left their cage open.

The two animals managed to get out of their pen at Leesburg Zoo in Virginia. They were later captured by the sheriff’s office and hit with tranquiliser darts before being returned to their enclosure.

In the largest Animal Welfare Act settlement ever assessed to an animal exhibitor, the owner of Ringling Bros. circus has agreed to pay a $270,000 fine to settle allegations of mistreatment of their animals, reported Fox News.

The Virginia-based owner of the renowned circus, Field Entertainment, which also owns other acts like Disney on Ice, is not admitting to violating any laws, but rather would like to resolve its differences with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

A COUPLE were left dumbfounded when a fugitive bull and a cow moo-ved into their Blunsdon garden and refused to budge.

Kevin Eggleton and Sally Hilton were just getting home from a night out and going to bed at about 1.30am on Saturday when the garden security light came on.

The owner of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus paid a $270,000 civil penalty for alleged violations of the Animal Welfare Act, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.

The fine paid by Feld Entertainment Inc. is the biggest ever assessed against an animal exhibitor, the USDA said today in an e-mailed statement. Vienna, Virginia-based Feld said in a statement that it didn’t admit any wrongdoing or violations.

Reports compiled by the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service describe cuts on elephants’ faces from sharp edges in bolts in transport trailers. A 35-year-old Asian elephant named Banko allegedly was forced to perform in Los Angeles despite a diarrhea attack, and a zebra escaped a protective fence and ended up on a major roadway in Atlanta. The USDA can assess penalties as much as $10,000 per violation…

Bounty To Sterilise Himachal Pradesh Monkeys Criticised

Animal rights activists have criticised a bounty of 500 rupees ($9.60) a head put on the capture of monkeys in India’s Himachal Pradesh state.

They say allowing members of the public to capture monkeys and hand them over for sterilisation could be “traumatic”.
