An 11-year-old matador killed six bulls in a controversial bullfight in Mexico on Saturday. Michelito Lagravere who started bullfighting when he was six and has killed 60 calves so far has become the youngest matador to kill so many animals during one performance. I’ve been aware of this Michelito for quite some time. I find the whole situation shocking and disgusting and I cannot believe that some people out there think it’s cool.
Because they do! Believe me! I am a Portuguese-American from Central California, land of the “bloodless” bullfighting. (Hah! I learned that ain’t true…but that’s another comment for another day.) I still subscribe to the Portuguese Tribune, the immigrant paper which fawns over the California bullfights and they had a full-page spread on the kid. If my Portuguese weren’t so bad, I’d have written a very angry letter.
This kid’s fame is widespread.
But it’s not just the cruelty of bullfighting. I find this to be exploitative and cruel to the child as well. It boggles the mind that there are parents out there who are clearly making money off this child. The appeal is that he is a novelty act…the miniature matador with the little calves. People will pay to see something so “cute.”
And what kind of psychological effect will there be on a child taught to kill, consistently and professionally, at such a young age? How will he view any kind of life, human or otherwise? People worry about the effect of video game shooters on kids, but at least they are not professionally killing live beings? What kind of an adult will this kid be in the future?
Un-frigging-believable. Gaaahhh!
