Truly critical moments do not often come along in wildlife conservation, but the decision of the Cites standing committee in Geneva tomorrow on whether or not to make China a licensed ivory buyer is one such, without any doubt.

If China’s application is approved, the resulting huge increase in the legal ivory trade will give the biggest possible shot in the arm to the enormous illicit trade which is supplied by poachers killing elephants across Africa – 23,000 a year at the most recent estimate…

Councillors Requested To Back Animal Circus Ban

Councillors in a second Dublin local authority will be asked to support a ban on circuses which use wild animal acts.

A motion has been tabled at tonight’s Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council meeting calling for the introduction of the restriction.

Green Party councillor Nessa Childers wants members to back “bye-laws or other measures which would ensure that circuses which use wild animals are prohibited from performing in any part of the local authority area”.

The move comes after councillors in Fingal voted last October to ban the circuses from performing on public land in its area…

Rescuers Save Fifth Animal

Five firefighters were dispatched to rescue a dog that had become trapped in a cave in Dunbar on Friday afternoon.

The dog crept into the cave, near Dunbar beach, at around 3pm and fire crews used a short extension ladder to retrieve the animal.

It’s the fifth time Lothian and Borders fire crews have been called to rescue a trapped animal in the last six weeks…
