Free Range Pork Labelling Is Misleading

Compassion in World Farming and the RSPCA say that although the animals might be born outside, most of their time is spent indoors being fattened up.

I read this with mixed feelings. It is absolutely right that the consumer should know what they are getting and be able to trust lables. However the increase in specific definitions and there fore inspection and enforcement is making it very difficult for small producers like ourselves. We produce rarebreed meat for local sale. All our feed is organic, we use no routine medication at all, and all animals are extensively reared. Yet with out paying great amounts of money we are becoming more and more limted in what we can say about our produce legally. We cannot say organic no matter our standards and there seems to be requirements for traditionally reared rarebreed and free range as well as outdoor reared.

Where do small ethical producers like us turn nest?
