Dog Launched Into Space 50 Years Ago

Unlucky Laika, who’s name translates as ‘barker’ was a female stray, recruited from the streets of Moscow. 50 years ago she was sent hurtling into space in a half ton Sputnik II. The missions scientists knew that Laika didn’t stand much of a chance of survival.

This weekend a bronze of Laika has apparently been unveiled in Moscow to commemorate the anniversary.

Perhaps a more appropriate gesture would be a safe place for Moscow strays to go, where they could be cared for and kept safely away from strange men that pick up stray dogs….
