Badger Tunnels

October 19th, 2007

So here it is…my first post…

Sadly I saw yet another dead badger last night. There seems to be an abundance of road casulties this Autumn already.

50,000 badgers are killed by vehicles each year in the UK. Badgers need to travel much further from their setts to seek food due to loss of habitat.

So what can be done?

Badger tunnels are a good idea, ( I’ve seen one in action before in Sussex) but according to Badger Land wildlife bridges are a better option:

Badger tunnels have been constructed under the M5 motorway in Somerset. Although it did take the badger a few years to use it, that tunnel is now saving badgers’ lives (and reducing car accidents on the motorway).

A much better idea is the use of Wildlife Bridges – as these provide natural, wide, green walkways over roads and railways which are suitable for all animals; and avoid the risks of flooding by rainwater or salt-water or foul-water run-off or pollution from the road surface.

More Badger News

BBC Wales have written an article about Gareth Morgan, known as ‘Badger Man’. Gareth has spent the last 25 years visiting a sett in Caersws, Powys. The Badgers have become accustomed to him, accepting Gareth as part of the group. He is currently helping to make film in an attempt to educate people to the plight of the badger.

“They’re the most ancient animal in Britain at the moment – but for how long I don’t know,” Mr Morgan said.

“It used to be the bear, then it was the wolf and now it’s the badger. Let’s hope we never lose it.”
